History:

History of Ostrava zoo is closely linked with the activities of miners at Zárubek and Alexander mines in Ostrava - Kunčičky. It began in 1948 on land near the mine Alexander. In form of voluntary work activities of the people of Ostrava, including school children. The result was a natural park used for recreational purposes . It included such as a natural stage, dance floor, a paddling pool and a sandpit . There even were two tennis courts and places to play volleyball and basketball. At the instigation of Bohumil Vitek was in 1949 decided to establish at the growing park the zoo. The first animal were three deer and five pheasants. These were joined soon after by peacocks and other birds. The official date of opening Ostrava zoo became the 26th October 1951, when it was first approved by the foundation deed. In 1952,  6 employees worked at the zoo . In 1953, Bohumil Vitek became the new director. Zoo at the time of its inception, faced with serious problems of the post-war period , including a disastrous shortage of building materials. Building material often derived from demolition, the zoo turned to businesses in Ostrava region for help or material goods. O humble circumstances evidenced by the fact that the management of the zoo was located in a 3x5 m room in the stables. Similar problems were among others in ensuring food. In the preserved writings state that repeatedly missed foods like sunflower, millet, birdseed and other times when securing their help Bratislava zoo. Inadequate were also possibility of storage of feed. It is reported that in 1955 it was only a small refrigerator for storage of meat , the monthly consumption at that time was 600 kg. The most valuable animal at the zoo was male Asian elephant Joe , who the zoo got in 1956 from the Prague Zoo. Joe was imported to Czechoslovakia as an eight-month baby elephant as a gift to the Vietnamese government. The elephant who has experienced both temporary wooden barracks and the new elephant house from 1962 in Ostrava, died in 1964 due to the fall in the ditch. The construction of the new zoo began in 1956 where the old one was moved to the present situation. In February 1960, the animals were moved from Kunčičky. The animals were housed in temporary wooden structures and cages who were transferred from Kunčičky , ie in conditions that today today is difficult to imagine. The zoological garden was first opened to the public 5th 1960, at the time it basically was one big construction site. With the arrival of winter were animals moved quickly into the finished heated warehouse and this was the open part of the zoo to the public until April of the following year. As was previously in Kunčičky, in Stromovka a significant portion of construction and other work initially carried out self-help and voluntary work activities of citizens, school children and local businesses. Without their help, the new zoo in Ostrava could hardly arise. Construction resumed in 1963, very slowly. Pensioners were also half of the 58 permanent staff. The zoo did not have enough funds to pay workers in the productive age. Gradually the basic circuit, as we know it today was built like basic infrastructure necessary for the operation of the zoo (especially the zoo kitchen, central hayloft , etc.). At this stage also a number of major exhibitis and pavilions were created, in particular enclosures for bears and monkeys. In the 1960s the collection got some major species as polar bear, North American alligators , flamingos and the first apes - chimpanzees " Lumba ", " Numb " and " Peggy ". The zoo got an African elephant " Petra " from the Prague zoo in 1965. Ostrava Zoo was selected as the only one who had met the minimum requirements of handling a massive and aggressive male elephant. This elephant survived at the zoo quite briefly, in 1968 it suddenly died of myocardial infarction. In the 1960's came other animal personalities who made an indelible mark in the history of Ostrava zoo. In 1967 female Indian elephant "Sonia " was imported , which in lived until 1991. About two months later, seven-year old female hippopotamus " Rose " arrived. And in July 1968 male hippopotamus "John " from Colonge zoo. The seventies were at the zoo a period of intense construction program. Substantially improved services to visitors, especially after the opening of the new parking lot and a buffet restaurant. In the background zoo was built multifunctional building for the rearing chicks, a zoo kitchen and wintering birds. And the area for quarantine and veterinary treatment was renovated. In 1975 was the hippo pavilion opened to the public. It later was used for breeding tapir and capybaras and now houses a nocturnal zoo. From the seventies, comes the original children's zoo and enclosure for gibbons in the pond at today's elephant enclosure . Today it is used for breeding lemurs. At the bottom of the garden were built two large enclosures for African ungulates. These were used for several years for breeding llamas, bactrian camels, Kulans and ponies. The enclosure for African animals was first completed in the 1980's as well as other unfinished buildings from the seventies - like the Hall of aquatic birds, small carnivores house and the learning center. At the zoo for the first time shoen where in the 1970's a snub-nosed rhino, Pere David's deer, Grevy's zebra, Diana's monkeys, Amur leopards, Kulans , tapirs, Sumatran tigers and more, mostly in pairs or breeding groups. Since it has ranked among the best facilities of its kind in the former Czechoslovakia. The year 1972 was the year of the most extensive animal imports from the former Soviet Union . The zoo imported a couple of polar bear cubs " Fram " and " Vega " a trio elk and Bactrian camels . Bear " Vega " lived to a respectable 34 years , and he died in 2006. In 1974 arrived in the zoo an extremely valuable transport - Rhinoceros "Natal " and " Dinah " from South Africa. Rhinoceros " Natal " now lives in the zoo of Dvur Kralove , " Dinah " died in 2008. The two rhinos were from the beginning kept in unsuitable conditions and for that reason had never reproduced. At the end of the 1980's the lacked of funds again. New arrivals in the 1980's were Syrian bears , binturongs and orangutan. The male orangutan " Bimbo " became one of the most popular zoo animals at Ostrava in the eighties and early nineties. " Bimbo " lived in Ostrava from 1981 to 1993 , when he was on the recommendation of the coordinator moved to another zoo. For the first time in the history of a Czech Republic and Slovakian zoo bred Cuban flamingos, Ceylon leopards , Hawaiian goose , bobcat and trumpeter swans in the 1980's. Similarly to all other Czech zoo , also Ostrava zoo went through in the first half of the nineties, a period of instability and legitimate concerns about their next future. Almost completely any investment activity stopped and changes affected the species composition of animals. There is a gradual loss of large mammal species. The situation is beginning to stabilize in the second half of the 1990s when a smaller investment first appears - like a new aviary for birds of prey (1997), a new house with parrot and handicapped birds aviaries (all 1998), new barns (1999).The new species mentioned features Canadian elk and Vietnamese sika deer. There is a significant increase in breeding parrots and waterfowl birds. Everything is returning to stabilization and Ostrava zoo was accepted into the prestigious European Association of Zoos and Aquaria ( EAZA ) in 1996. As in the second half of the nineties, construction in a smaller scale continued in the first years of the new millennium. In 2000, it was a new enclosure for lions and flamingo house. In a watershed event that made a definitive end to further stagnation Ostrava zoo , began considering the construction and opening of a new and modern elephant house (2004). The same year Ostrava zoo was admitted to the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums ( WAZA ). In particular, thanks to the financial support and patronage of the founder of the Statutory City, Ostrava zoo was gradually completed and got new enclosures for ponies and donkeys, cranes and red pandas, aviaries for Griffon Vultures and for birds from Tibet and China. In 2005 was a botanical trail completed and made available, followed by the construction of new greenhouses used as background for the botanical department. The Ostrava zoo is starting to profile not only as a zoo, but also a botanical garden. The peak of the first decade of the new millennium was the completion and opening (2010 ) of the new exposition complex for bears and langurs called Čitván Exhibtion a new children's zoo. Much-needed investment also garnered zoo facilities. It was an extensive gasification, built several wastewater treatment plants and sewerage systems and modernized breeding facilities, including facilities for fish and reptiles. Together with the construction of new buildings were demolished some of the old and unsatisfactory buildings such as the summer restaurant and old bird aviaries. Large mammals finally bred such as cougars, jaguars, polar bears and rhinos, but at the same time there has been a significant increase in species richness in Ostrava by especially adding reptiles , fish, amphibians and invertebrates. The largest breeding success were Sclater's lemurs, Siberian cranes and clouded leopards. For large support from the City of Ostrava, Ostrava zoo thanks to the upcoming projects in the next decade primed for significant change that the zoo moves back to the top of the zoos in the country. From the beginning of the 2010's, the zoo visitors could see a new restaurant throughout the year anexed to the teaching hall and outdoor water world. Now visitors also can walk freely among lemurs. Also a new entance was build with zoo shop and rest rooms.
